Nouns 
Nouns (1)    Nouns are a person, place, thing, or idea. In 4th grade, you have to become an expert on common and proper nouns. Common nouns name any person, place, thing, or idea. Proper nouns name specific person, place, thing, or idea. Proper nouns must be capitalized. An example of common nouns are girl, school, restaurant, or courage. An example of proper nouns are Mrs. Colbert, Ruby Young, and Olive Garden. The key is to remember to capitalize. You must also learn singular and plural nouns. Singular means just one person, place, thing, or idea. Plural nouns name more than 1 person, place, thing, or idea. Examples of singular nouns are boy, church, ox, and butterfly. Examples of plural nouns are boys, churches, oxen, and butterflies. Plural nouns come with rules such as  most nouns just require an -s to become plural (cars) nouns ending in s,x,ch, sh, or z,- add -es (bushes) nouns ending in consonant -y- change the y to i and add -es (babies) nouns ending in vowel -y- just add -s (birthdays) nouns ending in consonant o- add -es (potatoes) nouns ending in vowel -o- add -s (zoos) nouns ending in -f or -fe- change the -f or -fe to -v and add -es (knives) nouns that are irregular need to be changed to a new word (children) nouns that are irregular are the same as plural and singular- (sheep) Plural rules are hard, but the more you use them, the easier they get

Verbs 
Verbs are a part of speech that has used to describe an action, state, or occurrence, and forming the main part of the predicate of a sentence, such as hear, become, happen. Examples of action verbs- sit, stand, talk, walk Examples of linking verbs- is, are, was, were Examples of helping verbs- will, would, might, may For most verbs, you simply add an –ed to go from present tense to past tense. For irregular verbs, the word changes to another word to form the past tense. Regular verbs just add –ed Walk-walked   talk-talked       kick-kicked Irregular verbs change the word Teach-taught               say-said           buy-bought      catch-caught You would not say teached, sayed, buyed, or catched. Verbs are an important part of reading, writing, and speaking because sentences must have a verb in order to be complete.

Dear Parents and Guardians, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Melendra Johnson. I am so happy to be at Ruby Young Medical and Environmental Science Magnet Academy as the counselor and to be a part of such a wonderful school and community! Some people like football. Others are passionate about reading. However, I find fascinating to talk to, connect with, and help young people. I would like the students here to think of my office as a warm and friendly place where they are always welcome. My office is also a safe haven – a place where they can get help if they feel confused or worried. RYE is a great school! This doesn’t mean that our students won’t face challenges while they are here. It is important your children know that they have an ally, and that there is always an adult at the school who will be on their side. As a School Counselor, my primary responsibility is to promote the academic, personal, and social development of all students.  I look forward to offering support to the students, staff, families and community. Services Provided As the Counselor, I have the privilege to work with every single student in the school. I plan on working with students at the classroom level, small group level as well as at the short-term individual counseling level. I will also be meeting with parents, collaborating with teachers and staff, and consulting with community organizations to benefit and meet the needs of all Ruby Young students. CLASSROOM GUIDANCE LESSONS: These lessons will be presented in the classroom for students in grades K-5.  Lessons will teach developmentally appropriate preventative lessons to all children. GROUP COUNSELING: Group counseling is provided for small groups of students experiencing similar concerns. These may include making and keeping friends, anger management, coping with separation/divorce and or loss, getting organized/study skills and/or improving self-esteem. The groups generally range from 4 to 6 students and last for 6 to 8 sessions. The students for these groups can be recommended by parents/guardians or staff members. INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING: Short term one-on-one counseling support is available to all students in grades K through 5. Students may self-refer or be referred to the counselors by teachers/staff and/or parents. Confidentiality is respected. CONSULTATIONS: I am available to have meetings with teachers, administrators and/or parents to discuss the needs of individual students. I am here for all students and want to ensure that your child has a productive and positive school year. If I can support your child in anyway, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
